I'd like to start a localized blog with restaurant reviews, activitity reports, information on area attractions, and anything else we may want to throw in. I'm thinking in terms of a visitors guide for relocated Nittany Lions. If you are interested, please contact me, Russ Campbell, at rcc3@psualum.com.

Triangle PSU Chapter Wine Tasting (# 2)

On August 11, Penn State alumni gathered at The Wine Merchant in Raleigh to sample six Italian wines. The event turned out to be one of the Triangle PSU Chapter's most successful with 59 people sampling some very nice wines. Part membership drive kickoff and part social gathering. Those in attendance said that they were happy to see the Chapter expanding their events. That said, many said that they were glad football season was right around the corner.

The wines sampled were: Bidoli, '05 Pinot Grigio (Friuli, Italy); Cantina di Custoza, '05 Trebbiano di Lugana (Custoza, Italy); Degiorgis, '05 Moscato di Asti (Asti, Italy); Cantina Zaccagnini, '01 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (Abruzzo, Italy); Sant'Evasio, '04 Dolcetto (Asti, Italy); and Mastroberardino, '04 Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio (Campania, Italy). The last one was my personal favorite, mostly because I like quirky wines.

Some other folks had their own way of ranking wines:

I must agree both wines were very good and the ranking system is very creative.

Some other photos from the day:

Jeff tries unsucessfully to convince Dan and Ann that he used to play back up to Tony Sacca.

More coming soon...

This, that, and some other things...

I wanted to update every-one on where we stand with membership. As of today we have roughly 105 members. This is slightly ahead of last year pace, but is not bad with less than a month to go before football season. If you have not joined, you still have a few weeks to enter to be eligible for the football ticket drawing.

A friend of the Chapter sent the following email about Penn State soccer.:

Hope you are enjoying your summer, can't believe another football season is around the corner. As you know I live and breath soccer these days and I noticed on the UNC website that the PSU men are coming down over Labor day to play in a tournament. I also saw that PSU is rated # 5 and UNC #3 so it should be some good soccer. I thought maybe you could communicate the games to the Alums.

The schedule according to the UNC website is :

9/1 Wake Forest 5PM

9/3 UNC at 3:30PM

So there you have it…it’s a rare opportunity to root for the Real Shade of Blue in this area. If anyone is interested in coordinating an official event please let us know. rcc3@psualum.com If not, let’s call it an impromptu event and fill the stands.

OF LOCAL CONCERN

Northwestern's club will have a professor speaking about transportation at a lunch function on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Doubletree Guest Suites Raleigh/Durham (off I-40).

Dr. Joseph Schofer, a representative from the Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) will be on hand for the Q & A session. They may have enough room in our meeting for other Big 10 alums who are interested in "traffic" and its solutions.
